Top 4 Social Networking Mistakes

Our senses are limited on the internet – you cannot feel, taste, smell or hear, which leaves us only with vision.  That doesn’t give you much to work with to get your message out, does it?  If you’re not visible then no one can see who you are, right?  Let me explain.

  1. “I see you – but you don’t see me syndrome”
You have your Twitter account set up and you use it all the time. However; there is one little problem – you are still using the default image that Twitter gives  you (you know, the beady eyes)  and no one can see who you really are. This is so easy to change but there are so many users still using this. Make sure you add your photo or some identifying graphic, so people know who you are. Think about it this way… you have a Twitter or Facebook account where you have your photo on it – when a customer (that found you on one of the social networks) walks into your business, recognizes you from your profile photo…and says I know who you are!  I’ve seen you on that social network.  At that point, immediately, a bond has been formed.
  2. “The iPhone location syndrome”
I know that there are a few of you that just love your iPhone and you think that everyone has an iPhone…Well, I hate to be the one to break this to you, but not everyone has one. So many businesses are displaying the iPhone coordinates for their business in the location section of their profile. So what happens if a potential customer doesn’t have an iPhone? They would not know where you are located. There are ways for you to add more info to your Twitter home page. If you don’t know how, send us an email, we’ll be more than happy to help you out. My suggestion is to display as much information on how to get to your place as visible as possible, or make sure it’s very visible on your website or blog.
  3. ”The Multi Vision Effect”
Have you ever gone to a twitter page where all you see is multiple copies of the same image (tiled images – repeating themselves) and your eyes go cross eyed. This can be a big deterrent to a lot of people. This also doesn’t give your business a very good image. You would be better off using the defaults that Twitter gives you. There are pre-made Twitter backgrounds, and programs on the web that help you make them.  There are even companies, like us, that will customize a Twitter background for you.
  4. “The potpourri display”
You go to their Twitter page and it looks great! You then go to their website (if they have one) and it looks nothing like what you see on their Twitter page, making you wonder if you have gone to the right website or not.  Now you see they have a blog…and the blog looks different then the website and Twitter page. This is one of the biggest mistakes a business owner can make. Branding is so important! You need to project the same look on everything you do, from business cards, letterhead, brochures, Twitter Pages, blogs to websites….I don’t take a company very seriously, if I see a potpourri of media from 1 company.  Make sure that you are putting across the same look and same message in all your media that comes into the hands and/or eyes of your customer.  Brand recognition is important to your business’ success.
These are a few things that I see on a daily basis that can be easily fixed to help improve your success on the internet. If you have any questions feel free to call me.
Have a wonderful day.
